Designed
to complement our traditional services, integrative and expressive therapies
are offered with the intention of improving the comfort and wellbeing
of patients and family members. It is through this integrated approach
to complete care that these therapies play an important role in reducing
symptoms and ultimately improving quality of life.
Art
Therapy
Art
Therapy is a specialized discipline that provides the opportunity for
patients, family members and other persons dealing with grief and loss
to express themselves creatively and artistically, using a wide variety
of art materials.
Art Therapy
focuses on the many therapeutic benefits of the creative process in the
role of healing, and views the resulting artwork as a form of direct self-expression.
The creative process is, in and of itself, emotionally healing.
Artistic
talent or prior training is not required. All participants receive guidance
and encouragement to use the art materials in ways that are most meaningful
to them—and at their own level and ability.
Massage
Therapy
In
addition to satisfying the need for nurturing touch, the benefits of massage
therapy include: increased flow of oxygen to the tissue, stimulation of
endorphin release (the body's natural painkiller), and enhanced relaxation
and feelings of well-being. At Hope Hospice, the Licensed Massage Therapist
goes to the individual's residence, providing treatment that takes into
consideration the position of comfort for the individual. A variety of
therapeutic approaches, such as "Reflexology" and "Therapeutic
Touch" are used to alleviate symptoms of pain and anxiety and to
promote comfort for individuals dealing with life-threatening illness.
Music
Therapy
Music
touches many people in a way no words or actions could ever approach.
Music therapy allows the individual and family to rekindle memories of
the past, including the joys and the sorrows, through listening to their
choice of music, by playing an instrument, or by simply talking about
their life's music experience and meaning. This therapy not only reduces
pain and anxiety through relaxation; it offers an opportunity to bring
up and seek closure on issues most important at the end of one's life,
thereby promoting quality of life.
Aromatherapy
Aromatherapy
involves treatment using essential oils derived from plants that are valued
for their therapeutic properties. The therapeutic oils are either applied
directly by massage or by releasing the scents into the air by means of
a diffuser or pillows. Aside from being pleasant and relaxing, the therapeutic
agents in specific essential oils can assist with relieving anxiety, counteracting
fatigue, treating stress and insomnia, improving memory, and by alleviating
sorrow and depression.
Pet
Therapy
Doctors
and therapists are discovering the difference it makes in people's lives
when they spend time with a favorite pet. Pets have a special way of showing
unconditional love and uplifting spirits, no mater what the circumstances.
Medical research has shown that interaction with animals promotes many
therapeutic benefits, such as lowering blood pressure, easing physical
and emotional pain, improving memory, and reducing stress. Hope volunteer
pets are certified by the Therapy Dogs, Inc. Program prior to acceptance
into the Pet Therapy program. Whether at home, in a nursing or assisted
living facility, or in a Hospice House or the Hope Health Center, volunteer
pets and their owners create smiles, laughter, and peace of mind for all
involved.
